The laws of physics are unforgiving. When two vehicles collide head-on, the occupants of the bigger, heavier vehicle have a much better chance of walking away than the occupants of the smaller, lighter vehicle.

Unfortunately, this very scenario recently played out on a North Carolina road. The results were tragic as a mother and her young son were killed when their passenger vehicle was struck head-on by a dump truck.

The 29-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son were both pronounced dead at the scene of the violent crash about 250 miles east of Charlotte in Lenoir County on U.S. 258, south of Kinston.

the 33-year-old dump truck driver was treated for unspecified injuries. He has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. North Carolina law enforcement officials said that they do not yet know why the truck crossed the center line and slammed into the young mother’s car.

We do not know what caused this tragic loss of life, but we do know that in many similar motor vehicle wrecks, distracted driving is involved. A driver who is paying more attention to a text or phone call than the road and traffic puts everyone at risk.

In far too many similar situations, alcohol or drug use is involved. Recent research has shown that distracted driving is about as dangerous as impaired driving.

Those who have been injured — or who have lost loved ones to a negligent driver — can fight back with the help of a personal injury attorney experienced in wrongful death litigation. Contact the law office of Ayers, Ayers and Dressler for more information about justice and compensation.
