Dam worker dies two days after construction accident

We have recently discussed the different types of jobs in North Carolina that may pose risk to employees. It is often assumed that many of these seemingly risky jobs are dangerous and there’s no way to get around the risk. Contrary to what one may think, many of these presumed dangerous jobs are not in fact as dangerous as assumed when proper safety guidelines are enforced. One construction accident has recently left a 62-year-old man dead, and may leave his loved ones with the option of filing a claim for survivor’s benefits through workers’ compensation.

Initial reports claim the worker was getting ready to do some work near a dam at a construction site where he was employed. He allegedly attempted to monitor progress of the work when he lost his balance and fell almost 40 feet. The worker was taken to a nearby hospital where he lived only two days after the incident before he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The man was reportedly an experienced worker. He had been doing similar work in the construction field for over 40 years, and in addition he had a degree in civil engineering. As a result of the unknown reasons surrounding the man’s death, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is said to have been looking into the incident and conducting a proper investigation.

If the investigation concludes that the employers did not take the proper precautions to ensure the man’s safety, they may face fines associated with this construction accident. Additionally, the victim’s family may be entitled to certain survivor’s benefits through the workers’ compensation program. Most North Carolina employers are required to provide workers’ compensation insurance for their workers to help cover damages or lost wages after an on-the-job accident.
