Proper lifting techniques to save your back

On Behalf of | Jun 9, 2015 | Workplace Injuries

For many workers, lifting heavy objects is just another part of the job. Whether you have been unloading trucks for 20 years or just started a warehouse job, it is vital to use proper lifting techniques. Not doing so could lead to a spine injury and other problems, which could leave you unable to work.

First, figure out how much the object weighs. Lifting 50 pounds at once, increases the risk of getting injured. If needed, use a tool like a forklift or pallet jack instead. Also, use ramps to load trucks when possible, and never be afraid to call for a helping hand.

When it comes to the actual lifting, avoid jerking your back. While it is not a hard rule to never bend at the waist, bending at the knees will help you avoid any jerking motion. You should also never carry a load in a purposefully unbalanced way. For instance, carrying a load under just one arm can cause a spinal injury.

Now that you are carrying the object, it is important to make sure you are doing so in a way that does not put unnecessary stress on your back. Keep the load close to your body, about waist-height. If there are not handholds, make some if possible. Always use personal protection equipment for maximum protection and efficiency.

If you have suffered an on-the-job injury in North Carolina, it is important to contact an attorney. They may help you with any workers’ compensation paperwork, in addition to fighting any claims denials.
