When an individual files for social security disability benefits the claim is evaluated by Department Disability Determination Services (DDS). The average processing time for a claim is 45-140 days. Because DDS examiners are state employees, the Social Security Administration does not become involved in the state’s managing of the program. While the average processing times usually apply, individual cases can be handled quicker or, as is often the case, take longer than the estimated average time periods.
