Flying high over North Carolina highway crashes

Drones can be used to take spectacular aerial video of your vacation spot, wedding or family reunion. The miniature copters have a wide variety of uses in warfare, as flying “scarecrows” used to chase birds from crops, for surveillance of cheating spouses (and others) and much more.

Now North Carolina state troopers say they have a new use for drones: accident reconstruction. The state’s Department of Transportation has six of the mini-choppers that can be used by troopers to fly above the scenes of highway car crashes and other accidents.

According to a recent news report, car wrecks that result in fatalities are the top priority. Troopers who are investigating crashes that could result in serious charges against a driver involved in a wreck — drunken driving, reckless driving, etc. — will also take priority.

According to the news report, crash reconstruction and investigation can often mean that a highway or other road is shut down for hours. With the aid of drones equipped with high-resolution video cameras, troopers hope to be able to document many wrecks from above in 10 minutes or less.

“What we’re trying to do is take the scene and the evidence into the courtroom,” a spokesperson said, adding that the high-quality video taken from above will enable investigators to get a bird’s-eye view as well as fine details of crash scenes.

That will, in turn, enable investigators to determine who is at fault for crashes that result in serious injuries and fatalities.
