How SSD benefits can help for physical or mental disabilities

| Dec 23, 2019 | Social Security Disability

Eligibility for Social Security disability benefits is important for many disabled individuals who find themselves unable to work because of a physical or mental disability. For disabled individuals who have a history of working and contributing to Social Security, SSD benefits may be available to help them with some of their daily expenses.

Unfortunately, Social Security disability benefits can be challenging to obtain because the application process for benefits can be difficult. Many claims for Social Security disability benefits are initially denied. As a result, it is important to know how to present medical evidence of the disabled individual’s physical or mental disability in order to qualify for SSD benefits. It is important to note that the disabled individual must have qualifying medical history, must suffer from a physical or mental medical condition that prevents them from working and the disability must last for 12 months or longer.

Social Security disability benefits may be available to disabled individuals who suffer from either a physical or mental disability the latter of which can be at least equally disabling as a physical disability in some circumstances. Mental medical conditions that may qualify for SSD benefits can include depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Physical medical conditions that may qualify for SSD benefits include injuries, fibromyalgia, orthopedic conditions and occupational illnesses.

It is important whether the disabling medical condition is physical or mental that it be severe enough that it prevents the disabled individual from working. Navigating the Social Security disability application process can be daunting and discouraging at times which is why trained guidance through the application and appeals process can be valuable in many instances.
